The Troubled State of the Checkin Explained in a Comic
Last Week Andrew Jones who recently launched a new site at StatusThis.com created an all to real comic showing the current state of the Checkin.

While the comic is clearly funny, the reality is that because we now have several different location based apps each of them filling different niches with different groups of our friends on them, this situation can often be the case for many people. I currently find myself determining which apps to checkin with depending on the type of location. If it’s a restaurant then it’s definitely Yelp as well as Brightkite and or Foodspotting to snap photos of what I’m eating. If it’s a more social location like an event, or bar then I’m checking in using Foursquare or Gowalla both to broadcast that I’m at the location, as well as to find other friends that are there.
As more apps will likely join the fray this year it will become even more complicated. I half-joked a while back that I now need an app to cross-post to multiple checkin services. Think Ping.fm but for location based services. I would actually really like that right now and hope someone is working on it.

i understand the concept but don't get the point… are you checking in to let your friends know where you are and tacitly inviting them to join you… or do you just need to show how cool you are by going to checkin-worthy places? I don't really care if you're the mayor of every freakin' starbucks between New York and Los Angeles. I don't give a flying F if you're at Zankou Chicken… unless you're on your way to my place and you're bringing me a lula kabob and some of that glorious fluffy rice (mmmm… hungry…. hungry & homesick…)
I primarily use checkin services to share restaurants I enjoy eating at as well as letting friends know locations I'm at to meetup with them. I also find the historical data a nice way to build a breadcrumb trail of places I've been tied to dates. I'm not really into the gaming aspects but don't find them terribly distracting either. I love your comment and would definitely get you a Lula Kabob next time I hit up Zankou (extra garlic sauce please!)
Thanks. I congratulate you for this blog.
